Govt Plans to Import 600-700 Thousand Cattle Next Year
Illustration (Photo: Antara Foto/Sigid Kurniawan), Jakarta: Government plans to import cattle in the beginning of 2016 to fulfill domestic demands throughout the year. It is still calculating cattle imports quota for next year.
Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman said the preliminary number is around 600-700 thousand cattle.
"We are still calculating the quota for next year.the range is around 600-700 thousand cattle," said Amran in Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs, Jakarta, Monday (12/7/2015) night.
Ministry of Agriculture now fasten the development of Naduk island in Bangka Belitung province that will be used for cattle quarantine center. The quarantine center is needed because government will not only import cattle from countries that are fully free from Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD)
"we will fasten the construction of quarantine island. Hopefully it could be done next year," he said.
According to Animal Husbandry and Animal health Law issued in 2014, government is allowed to import cattle using zone-based system with several conditions. 
Zone based system means government can import cattle from countries that are not fully free from foot and mouth disease (FMD) like India, Argentina, Brazil and so on. While country-based system means government can only import cattle from countries that are 100% free from FMD like Australia and New Zealand.
Quarantine island is one of the conditions to implement zone-based system. The island will be used examine the health of the imported cattle.
